Silvio Jermann belongs to that narrow list of people able to make the difference in his work, that is to produce wines, and keep the name of Made in Italy high in the world. It is no exaggeration, in fact, to affirm that his wines have been able to make Friuli Venezia Giulia known in the world, presiding over the international markets with an incredible qualitative constancy. After the success of the iconic Vintage Tunina in 1979, repeated in 1987 by that of Where Dreams, Silvio, in 1991, gave birth to the wine that was going to complete his famous trilogy: Capo Martino.
Curiously, this wine was born with another name, “Piccolo Sogno, verso una terra promessa” (Little Dream, towards a promised land), with the intention of paying homage to his great-grandfather Anton who, in 1881, emigrated from Slovenia to establish his business in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Since 1992, however, the wine took its name with which it is known today, Capo Martino, which was the name of the hill purchased from the winery in the Gorizia area. The wine was inspired from the beginning by the traditional type of vinification that Silvio’s father, Angelo, followed in the production of his wines, with a slight maceration on the skins of grapes harvested in slight withering.
Today the recipe has remained unchanged and is composed of a blend of traditional autochthonous vines such as Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, Picolit and Ribolla Gialla, harvested overripe. After manual harvesting and gentle pressing, the must rests on the skins for a short period, then ferments and ages in cask for 12-16 months.
The result, in the 2017 vintage, is a straw-yellow color wine with golden reflections that immediately indicate its glyceric texture, declined to the nose by an almost buttery first impact. The scents continue with the tropical yellow fruit, almost over-ripe, that slowly gives way to almost whispered boisée echoes, and then closed on kiwi and lime. The mouthfeel is a sample of elegance, with an almost velvety tactile progression on which stand out minerality, sapidity and a pleasant citrus and thirst-quenching freshness, which accompanies the sip up to a long almond finish.
