When we talk about ecological wine, regardless of whether we are supporters or haters, it would be foolish to deny the existence of wineries that, with their work, have made the seed of ecology take root, as true pioneers, from the north to the south of Italy. I am talking about those wineries whose name, willy-nilly, is on the lips of anyone who feels sincere admiration for this methodology of making wine and, even before that, of living the space with a clear political position, unable to compromise. Rujno 2003, Gravner
When we talk about Josko (Francesco) Gravner we tend to summarize the work of this man by associating him with the famous aging containers he has used for almost 20 years: the Georgian amphorae (the qvevri). To say the truth, his story is much more fascinating and also much longer since his winery was born long before him, in 1901, when his family bought a house and 2.5 hectares of vineyard in Oslavia, in the Collio Goriziano, on the border with Slovenia. Ariento 2018, Massa Vecchia
We are in Massa Marittima, in the province of Grosseto, about twenty kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the upper Maremma Toscana, in an area characterized by metalliferous hills; here, in 1985, Fabrizio Niccolaini and his wife Patrizia Bartolini founded the farm Massa Vecchia. While remaining in the family, the management of the company passed, from 2009 to 2018, into the hands of Patrizia’s daughter, Francesca Sfrondini, who manages it in partnership with Daniel and Ines Wattenhofer, Thomas Frischknecht and Rocco Delli Colli. Pinot Nero Modri 2009, Radikon
Of Radikon, in Oslavia, in the heart of Collio Goriziano, just 3 kilometers from the Italian-Slovenian border, are famous wine choices that over the years have led this winery to fire wines that, as they like to repeat, “not everyone likes”. In fact, what Stanko Radikon has tried to tell, throughout his life, through his wines, is nothing more than truth, sincerity and respect for his land, passing these values to his son Saša, current owner. Prelit 2016, Damijan Podversic
Since 1988, in Collio Goriziano, land marked by a fratricidal war during the Second World War, there is the winery of Damijan Podversic, with its vineyards, located on the top of Monte Calvario, protected by a thick bush. Damijan’s vocation for viticulture was inherited by his grandfather, who cultivated lands not owned by selling wine for a handful of air, and by his father, from whom he inherited just half a hectare. Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio 2009, ARPEPE

The Pellizzati family has been producing wine in Valtellina for over a century and a half, a valley of glacial origin that extends parallel to the Alps for 120 kilometers, from the Stelvio Pass to Lake Como. The first official documents mention the wines of this family as early as 1860, and tell how this last has continued to produce them, through four generations. Merlot 2007, Dario Prinčič

Dario Prinčič’s winery is located near the Oslavia Ossuary (built in 1938 to house the remains of 57,000 soldiers who died in the First World War), just outside the city of Gorizia, in the easternmost part of the Friulian Collio, on the border with Slovenia. We are in a borderland that, after having experienced the suffering of bloody fighting and devastation, remained abandoned until the reconstruction of the 1950s. Bucce 2012, Poggio Argentiera

The story of Poggio Argentiera began in 1997 when Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist and scientific researcher from Maremma, and his wife Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought Podere Adua, a prestigious estate in front of Marina di Alberese, in the province of Grosseto. It was a plot of 6 hectares of vineyards, 5-6 kilometers from the sea, created at the beginning of ‘900, the time of the drainage of those lands, on the border with the Natural Park of Maremma. Extrò, Kante

When we talk about Edi Kante we should always assume that he is one of the most influential winegrowers of the Karst, in the far central-eastern quadrant of Friuli Venezia Giulia. This land has a history bathed in the blood of over 1,500,000 soldiers, both Italian and Austro-Hungarian, who died during the First World War, and has experienced, as a logical consequence of such bloodbath, a period of terrible economic recession, which has been remedied only by the recovery plan launched in 1950.
