To speak of Ligurian viticulture without mentioning Rossese di Dolceacqua would be to do a wrong to the prestige of this wine, all founded on the incredible elegance it can express in Val Nernia, a handkerchief in the first hinterland halfway between the Western Ligurian sea and the Mountain. Although, since the 1950s, there has been the depopulation of those lands, with the reduction of the hectares of vines from 3,000 to just 80, there are still figures like that of Giovanna Maccario, who with tenacity and conviction carry on the tradition of this wine. According to the available sources, it seems that the Parusso family began to deal with grapes and wines as early as 1901 when the pioneer Gaspare bought his first vineyard in the Mariondino area, in Castiglione Falletto. Since then this family has continued in its symbiotic path with the vine until 1971 when Armando Parusso, from his winery in Cascina Rovella (in Bussia), began to bottle his wine with his own label. Dolceacqua is a small enclave, just over 80 hectares, in the far west of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente, a few kilometers from France, which boasts a tiny production of wines based on Vermentino and Rossese. The beauty of the place, with its ethereal and timeless landscapes, also led the leader of impressionism, Claude Monet, to fix some traits in his famous “Le Château de Dolceacqua” which include the houses of the old village and the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). Despite being relatively easy to prove that the cultivation of vines in the Salento Peninsula goes back over 4000 years, it is however undeniable that in that area (now roughly corresponding to the southernmost part of Puglia) viticulture, as we conceive it today, was something unknown even at the end of the 60s. To give an idea of this situation, just think that the Family Taurino, despite having begun to be interested in viticulture for seven generations, still in the middle of the 20th century sent his bulk wines to the North where, thanks to their breadth and generous taste-olfactory profile, were used to give more body, alcohol and color to indigenous excessively “lights” wines. To establish a date of the connection between the Pecorari family and viticulture in the Isonzo valleys, near Gorizia, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, just 10 kilometers from the border with Slovenia, we have to go back to 1879. Since then this connection has never been broken, passing through five generations, and arriving at the current owner Alvaro Pecorari who, starting from the important development work done by his father, gave it a definitive organization through the creation of Lis Neris winery. The history of Château Sociando-Mallet has its roots back in time, until the beginning of the seventeenth century, judging by the fact that it is possible to find official documents that attribute those lands to an aristocrat of Basque origin who was Sociondo’s surnamed. Over time Sociondo became Sossiondo and then Sociando, until 1831 when, after numerous changes of hands, the owner Marie-Elisabeth Alaret joined the name of the property to her grandfather one, the sea captain Achille Mallet, giving definitive origin to the Château Sociando-Mallet. The history of Mamete Prevostini winery begins in Mese, a small village in Valchiavenna in the province of Sondrio, 15 kilometers north of Lago di Como, in 1928, with the creation of an artisan company dedicated to the production of fruit and vegetables, wine and sausages. It is a local activity that has as its operating center the family’s Crotto, a typical natural cavity formed in prehistoric times that guarantees ideal temperatures for the preservation of food and drinks. The history of the Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur has its roots in 1830 when their ancestor, Alphonse Gros, after his marriage to Julie Latour, partly bought, and partly inherited, the first vineyards in Vosne Romanée. This estate, known as Domaine Louis Gros, remained unchanged until 1963 when, on Louis’ death, it was divided between his sons, with Colette and Gustave joining to create a unique project with the iconic name of Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur. There are some occasions when it is problematic to tell a winery without falling into the obvious that, inevitably, brings a fame of the caliber of the one that, with good reason, can boast of Fontodi. Actually this story begins several generations ago for the fame of the Manetti family (owner of the winery) in the production of terracotta, to the point of providing it also for the recoating of the Florence Duomo dome and for the reconstruction of Uffizi Gallery flooring. The wines produced by Marco Buvoli, in Gambugliano, about 10 kilometers northwest of Vicenza, in the Castellari Mountains, between the Lessini and the Berici, have been for about fifteen years one of the most prestigious expressions of Italian sparkling Pinot Noir. Marco, on the other hand, is the son of Nevio Buvoli, one of the first Italian sommelier, who trained him to recognize the difference between a mediocre wine, a simply good one and an excellent one. Even in a strip of land so suited to the highest level wine production, such as the Côte-d’Or in Burgundy, there are few wineries that can boast the privilege of being closely linked to the timeless myths, as in the case of Rouget, whose homonymous owner, Emmanuel Rouoget, lived the vineyard side by side, from the age of 18, with his uncle Henri Jayer. For the few who did not know, when we talk about Jayer, we talk about a figure who literally revolutionized the way of making wine in those lands, to the point that it is not out of place to talk about a “before” and an “after” Henri Jayer. The quality of the virtuous models of agriculture developed near the slopes of the Vulture volcano, now extinct, has for centuries been considered of the highest level, especially with regard to viticulture. In these lands the Aglianico grape finds one of its most suitable habitats, giving life to true enoic masterpieces, as several wineries, for a long time, have been able to show the audience of the most demanding wine lovers. In order to fully explain the importance of the Hofstätter winery in South Tyrol, we must first of all remember its connection with Tramin and its centuries-old wine history. Wine began to be mentioned in Termeno as early as 1100, and in a document of 1214 we read the authorization granted by the bishop of Trento to the production of wine in his area. The undeniable charm that Bordeaux is able to arouse with enviable constancy, is one of the distinctive features that has allowed its wine trade to thrive over the centuries. This observation also applies to Château Giscours, a wine obtained from a landowner, in the area of Margaux, taken over by Pierre de l’Horme in 1552, and expanded progressively until 1571.
