The first historical sources, dating back to the 10th century, speak of the Poggio di Monteraponi, in the heart of the Chianti Classico territory, on which stood the homonymous village. Right in this enclave, which already at the time owned cellars for wine production, under the Poggio’s tower, now stands the farm Monteraponi, founded in 1974 and still managed by Michele Braganti. The company currently covers over 200 hectares, of which 12 are dedicated to viticulture, with the cultivation of Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo and Trebbiano, 8 to olive growing and the rest is composed of oak and chestnut woods surrounding the company, isolating it within a protected micro-area.
Its Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello originates from a careful selection of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, coming from the oldest vineyard of the estate, 420 meters above sea level, surrounded by woods. The grapes, once arrived in the cellar, after a careful manual harvest in small wooden boxes, are washed and then conveyed to a Burgundian original destemmer which gently separates the stalks from the berries; the latter, then, are selected again, on a vibrating sorting table, to be carefully pressed. The must, transferred in vitrified concrete tanks, faces the fermentation process, with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, and the maceration of about 30-35 days, with daily manual cap broken and pushed down. After the subsequent spontaneous malolactic fermentation the wine ages in large oval barrels in French or Slavonian oak for a little more than 2 years and, therefore, is left to decant for 3 months in cement tanks, before being bottled by fgravity, without filtration or clarification.
This 2015 vintage, with a ruby color with garnet nuances of medium consistency, is characterized by a broad bouquet both horizontal and vertical, with initial hints of red fruit at the point of maturation (above all Ravenna cherry)red orange and dehydrated rose and violet petals, followed by the spicy part (the real protagonist) with black pepper, licorice, tobacco, damp earth, young leather, and final bloody and empyreumatic echoes. The mouthfeel is fresh and agile with well present gentle tannins, perfectly fused with the fruity hints, in the centre-palate, that slowly evolve towards ending notes of blood and vinyl, in a long persistence final.
