When you write about a bottle of wine you should not be influenced by the producer good intentions, but it is undeniable that the reality of Calafata cooperative deserves a brief general introduction. Its name, with a strong symbolic value, comes from the Calafati Masters, ancient artisans who had the task of restructuring, waterproofing and making suitable for navigation, wooden boats. Like these craftsmen, the cooperative also works to “restructure” and retrain the most marginalized and disadvantaged people, giving them back first of all their dignity, and making them able to “sail” in the sea of life. It operates at different levels, ranging from the creation of alternative economic circuits, to tourism and farming and agriculture.
The agriculture, in detail, takes place on the hills near Lucca and in the plains of the Tyrrhenian coast, in land abandoned by industrial agriculture, because unprofitable and therefore destined to cement, or torn, with patience and effort, to the forest. The cultivations are manifold and they go from the fruit to the vegetables, from the honey to the oil and, finally, to the wine; a 360-degree project that, between the wines, counts this Figliodiuncane. It is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, produced exclusively in Magnum bottles (1.5 liters) and with a numbered circulation of just 150 pieces. The grapes, bred according to biodynamic principles, come from the vineyard Maolina, with a North-South exposure, on a medium soil, mainly clay, rich in skeleton. After the manual harvest and the arrival in the cellar, maceration ( 12-14 days) and spontaneous fermentation begin, with indigenous yeasts, with daily fullings and pumping over, followed by a 2 years aging in exhausted barriques.
This 2017 vintage shows a beautiful intense ruby color, with purple nuances, and aromas of blueberry, black currant and black cherry under spirit, blackberries, plums and rhubarb, eucalyptus, undergrowth and earthy notes, Golden Virginia tobacco and vinyl. The mouthfeel is deep and tannic, with a iodine and balsamic vein, balanced by excellent freshness, and disarming drinkability that ends with red fruits and spicy notes.
