The Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger had known the Chianti territory for several years, being used to spend there the holidays with his family. Slowly Egger fell in love with those places and decided to establish, in 2012, a farm, with 100 hectares of land, in the territory of Radda, the famous sub-area of Chianti Classico, between Florence and Siena. The name chosen for the estate was Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni, because of the fact that it stood in the Castiglioni’s burgh, known since 1078 and formerly administered by Badia a Coltibuono.
Sean O’Callaghan, a leading figure in the Chianti landscape who, previously, had brought to fame another winery in Chianti Classico, was chosen from the very beginning to guide the winery’s wine production and its 20 hectares of vineyards, and to oversee the production of wines. O’Callaghan, who decided to adopt the principles of biodynamic viticulture, with the refusal of any chemical intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, immediately transmitted its style, made of naturalness, craftsmanship and attention to the smallest production details.
The wines produced immediately caught the attention of wine lovers, with tests of skill like this “Il Guercio” (with clear reference to the nickname of O’Callaghan), a pure Sangiovese coming from “Mello” vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti, at 700 meters. over the sea level. The vines, cultivated according to biodynamic principles, produce grapes that are harvested late, to bring them to a slight over-ripening, fermented, long macerated (4 months!!!) and aged in cement.
The wine obtained, in this 2018 vintage, has a sparkling ruby color rather low, with initial aromas of cherry, black cherry granite and blood orange to which are associated, in a second time, hints of cinchona’s branch and empyrrhematic. In the mouth the wine shows a disarming ease of drinking, united to a strange combination of rustic and elegant tones, with barely hinted tannins, glyceric sweetness just whispered, great crispness and blood-iron echoes which accompany the sip towards a definitely thirst-quenching almond final.
