Lucca province wine-growing history has its roots in the remote past: it seems that the land was already cultivated, before the arrival of the Romans, by the Etruscans and Ligurians, primordial connoisseurs of the wine production techniques. The historical sources clearly testify the vine presence in the slopes of Lucca northern hills before the year 1000 and the famous Sante Lancerio (cupbearer of Pope Paul III) wrote about the excellent quality of those wines, in his notes of 1400. In such historical lands, in 1993, was born Tenuta di Valgiano, pioneering biodynamic-natural approach comapny in Italy. The vineyards occupy about 20 hectares, at an average altitude of 250 meters above sea level, with the vines arranged around the cellar, on a soil rich in acid sandstone and limestone marl. The winery, which has in the iconic Tenuta di Valgiano its standard-bearer, also includes the production of this Palistorti Rosso, a true “second vin” according to the French Bordeaux stile.
The bunches of Sangiovese (70%), Merlot (20%) and Syrah (10%), coming from the young vineyards and from the second choice of the old ones, are selected on three sorting tables, destemmed and conveyed in small wooden vats, where they are pressed with the feet. The must ferments spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts, in oak barrels, and ages in vitrified concrete tanks (40%) and French oak barriques (60%) for 12 months, before being bottled without filtration.
The 2017 vintage has an intense ruby red color, of great texture and brightness, with an important consistency. The nose opens with notes of black cherry and cinnamon, followed by noble spices, licorice sticks, tobacco, humus, hints of blood-ferrous and vinyl. In the mouth the wine shows fresh amplitude, dynamized by young but already ripe tannins, and an acid/sapid component which gives the mouthfeel great pleasure and drinkability.
