There are some occasions when it is problematic to tell a winery without falling into the obvious that, inevitably, brings a fame of the caliber of the one that, with good reason, can boast of Fontodi. Actually this story begins several generations ago for the fame of the Manetti family (owner of the winery) in the production of terracotta, to the point of providing it also for the recoating of the Florence Duomo dome and for the reconstruction of Uffizi Gallery flooring. When trying to describe the evolution of Brunello di Montalcino over the last 40 years, one of the names that I personally consider essential is that of Gianni Brunelli and his winery. Although, unfortunately, the love story between Montalcino and this winemaker lasted just twenty years and ended prematurely with his death, the values expressed resist time, thanks to the perseverance of Gianni’s wife, Laura, who today continues to lead the winery with the same determination. Although the Maria Pia Castelli winery was founded only in 1999, in this short period of time it has already managed to become one of the reference producers of the Marche region. According to the available historical sources, it would seem that the history of the area of Carmignano has its roots in the Early Middle Ages, with documents attesting to its agricultural vocation dating back to 804 BC. The history of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona winery begins in the seventeenth century when the Bishop of Montalcino and of the Sant’Antimo Abbey, Fabius de’ Vecchis, builds an episcopal palace in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south-east quadrant of the current Brunello di Montalcino docg area. After the death of the Bishop, the palace and the related lands were bought and sold until the middle of the 20th century when they finally came into the possession of the Ciacci family which, shortly after, became related to the Piccolomini d’Aragona family, descendant of Pope Pius II. On Monday, November 22nd, took place in Milan, in the halls of The Westin Palace hotel, the famous Chianti Classico Collection event, a particularly prestigious appointment that allows you to get an idea of the next vintages coming out of this famous denomination, protected and promoted, since 1924, by the Chianti Classico Consortium.
The event brought to Milan more than 60 companies operating in the Chianti Classico area and many of them, in addition to the wines with that denomination, have opted to present also those that, while remaining local wines, fall under the name Toscana IGT. The history of the Badia (Abbey) in Coltibuono is very ancient: it was built around the church of San Lorenzo in Coltibuono, in the second half of the eleventh century, taking the name of Badia a Cultusboni, from the Latin cultus (agriculture) and bonus (good), which told how those lands had a particular vocation for agriculture.
