Among the protagonists of the birth and development of modern enology in Friuli-Venezia Giulia is undoubtedly the figure of Dorino Livon, a true pioneer of both Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli.
It dates back to 1964, in fact, the first plot of vineyards purchased by Dorino, expanded progressively, to cover the current 180 hectares. In the mid-80s, the company passed from its founder to his sons Valneo and Tonino, who, today, have given way to the third generation of the family, his nephews Matteo and Francesca.
It is to Valneo and Tonino that the choice to enhance production should be addressed, with the division between the line of “classic” wines and that of “Cru” wines, the flagship of the winery, while, thanks to Francesca and Matteo, today the company has two separate cellars, dedicated respectively to the production of red and white wines.
Over the years, the Livons have become aware of the need to extend their production philosophy in order to remain on the market effectively, and, between 1992 and 2001, have acquired four other wineries. Although it would be incorrect to make a comparison between them (also because they are located in different areas of Italy) the fact remains that the Livon winery, with its labels featuring the Winged Woman by the Russian artist Ertè, represents the flagship of the family.
Speaking of Livon it is almost obligatory to mention its top production: Braide Alte, a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Picolit and Moscato Giallo cultivated in the homonymous vineyard in Ruttars in the Municipality of Dolegna del Collio.
This vineyard is located at 250 meters above sea level, and is planted at a density of 8000 vines per hectare on land born from earthy deposits of underwater origin, the famous Flysh friulano.
After manual harvesting in crates, the grapes are sent to the cellar to macerate in cold before crushing and fermentating in new barriques of Allier, at controlled temperature, always in separate batches. The aging lasts eight months, always in the barriques of fermentation, and is followed by the assembly of the masses and a long period of aging in bottle before commercialization.
The 2018 vintage shows a straw-yellow color of medium intensity and good consistency, with an olfactory range that opens on notes of iodine, mango, dried apricot and overripe yellow peach, followed by freshly mowed green grass, toasted hazelnut, chamomile and resin, with final echoes of burnt bone and damp flint.
Despite the pleasantly articulated nose, the palate is the strong point of this wine, thanks to a glittering entry, perfectly balanced between acidity and fat, breadth and impalpability, and a persistence in perfect balance between sapidity and glyceric roundness; all enriched by the return of overripe yellow fruit and iodine, which accompany the sip towards an excellent length closure.
