Tramin winery is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious wineries in South Tyrol. Founded in 1898 on the initiative of the Tramin pastor, to bring together the small winegrowers of those areas, and merged in 1971 with the nearby Cantina Sociale di Egna, today the winery brings together 160 families who cultivate 260 hectares of vineyards under the careful guidance of winemaker Willi Stürz. The land is divided into small plots, cultivated in an artisan way by the same families that have owned them for centuries, and this aspect has allowed to preserve the great wealth of experience necessary to get only the best from each individual vineyard.
The great richness and variety of land owned, has driven Willi Stürz, since 1990, to begin to vinify separately the various areas most prestigious vineyards, giving rise to the famous and award-winning Reserves. From this last experience, the winery took the cue to take a further step towards the search for absolute quality, with the birth of two wines that we could call the “Reserves of Reserves”, one of which is Chardonnay Troy. It is a wine which, starting from the 2015 vintage, wanted to take up the challenge, very topical, of being able to give birth to a product with a unique and specifically territorial identity, starting from one of the most widespread and inflated grape varieties of the world: a South Tyrolean mountain Chardonnay!
The two selected vineyards from which it comes are about 25 years old, and are located in Sella (6 kilometres north of Tramin) ,with a south-east exposure, on calcareous gravel mixed with clay soils, at an altitude of over 500 meters. The few grapes obtained (38 quintals per hectare), harvested by hand with a selection of grain by grain, are pressed together with the stalk with delicacy and, subsequently, carry out the two fermentations (alcoholic and malolactic) in barriques. The long wine aging period develops first in barriques, for just under a year, and then in steel, for little less than two years, constantly in contact with its yeasts. Other four months in the bottle and the wine is ready for marketing.
The 2017 vintage has a full golden yellow colour, with a slight whiff of alcohol and a range of aromas mainly focused on syrup peach, ripe pineapple, toasted hazelnut and dolomitic flora, flanked by dried apricot, fresh grass, dry hay and damp chalky pebbles, with concluding echoes of combusted bone and boisée. In the mouth it is well balanced between softness, sapidity and mineral bitterness, with a citric acidity that intervenes just one moment after, and balances a sip enriched by the return of yellow fruit, toasted hazelnut and boisée, to which is added, after the long closure, a refreshing and pleasant citrine component (almost “sharp”), along with an even too tad alcoholic heat.
